Nice battle!
Up to 8/4 Dennis was unlucky with his break.Maybe that made the difference.
But Shane played great. Great cueball control.
Arty0569   | Registered | 2007-06-05 18:36:20
That 5-ball shot on the hill was so clutch! Van Boening's break is just awesome to watch live. The finals were even better.

Shane Van Boening is the world's #1 according to AZbilliards.com
poolm200   | Registered | 2007-06-05 23:41:04
shane's pattern play is very low percentage, which makes his cue ball is lucky at best. still lacks finesse. bright future for him considering he isn't very "polished" yet
rayshooter22   | Registered | 2007-06-23 10:51:26
I wouldn't say his pattern play is low percentage at all. If you see the shots and patterns he plays on key balls you can see that he never gets out of line and only plays patterns that ensure correct angle and direction for the cue ball in order to run out the rack. Shane is a very seasoned and polished pro even at 23... don't underestimate the young gun... after all he is the world champ 8)
poolm200   | Registered | 2007-06-06 00:41:03
Dennis Orcullo is a more impressive player than Shane ... the break was the determining factor. A few more scratches on the break for Dennis and more dry breaks than Shane. Dennis understands that game better than Shane, but we all know ... its pool and the better player doesn't always come out ahead. :) all in all, good shooting by both players.

Great match. Shane is definately a shot maker. Has a great break. Dennis had some bad breaks. Good shooting on both sides. Did the rules change on breaking inside the box for 10 ball?
belmicah   | Registered | 2007-06-06 17:17:26
Break from box. 10 ball on break doesn't count (spotted) and alternate breaks.
Jorge Torres   | Registered | 2007-06-06 19:27:23
There was NO break from the box requirement at the World Championship. And the 10 on the break counted so long as it was not in the two corner pockets by the rack. The alternate break part is right.

The Florida Tour rules are: break from the box. 10 on the break doesn't win, gets spotted, breaker keeps shooting. And winner breaks.

Way to go Shane. You played excellent pool. I look forward to seeing your continued success. Thank you propoolvideo.com Couldn't have seen this without you. Shane played some unreal shots making an out where others would have played safe. Excellent position play while playing the odds game for those hard to control cut shots.

Definitely an unusual miss for Orcullo. Just shows that everyone is human.
Sensation   | Registered | 2007-06-17 20:20:29
Looks like the ball curved.
rayshooter22   | Registered | 2007-06-23 10:54:00
That's what's called being under PRESSURE!! The maddening and sumtimes overwhelming sensation we all get when one of our opponents is running away with the set. It happens to us all and in this case it happened to Dennis. He's human just like all of us. He's allowed one miss every two to three months...
ELBeau   | Registered | 2007-06-11 02:37:40
what a precision shot from the one to the two in the final game! He definitely took a chance on achieving pinpoint shape, but it worked.
Thanks for posting up the match so soon Jorge. Great work as always!
Dave   | Registered | 2007-06-18 21:35:45
Unlucky? Mr Orcullo was beaten to the shot on almost EVERY occasion. Had it been winner breaks he could have gotten something.

For those of you not in the know about who Shane Van Boening is. Let this be a clear cut statement that this kid, at 23 years old, is the best player in the USA. He has every tool a pool player needs to make it to the top. He's placed at least second his last three major events, and is the strongest US player right now. Watch out for this kid in the future, I hope that everyone realizes this kid belongs on the MOSCONI CUP! Congrats Shane and great showing :D

"Shane is young and plays bad patterns, he got lucky 3 events due to intimidation and wonder. He'll either get better or you'll see what i'm talking about ... he can't beat a Corey Deuel or Louis Ulrich type player in the long run. He lacks knowledge."

Well just so you know Corey Deuel and Shane Van Boening are playing right now, (9/15/07) in a 10 Ball match, race to 100, in Sioux Falls, SD. Shane is leading the match 76 games to Corey's 58 games. Looks like Shane can hang with the big boys.
jcouch76   | Registered | 2007-09-16 02:20:01
Shane finished his match with Corey Deuel. It was a race to 100. Shane won 100 - 70. Shane would have won by more but he seem to let up at the end. So, it seems he must not play too bad of patterns. People will soon have to recognize his greatness.
poolm200   | Registered | 2007-08-19 06:55:29
Rayshooter obviously doesn't play that well. Shane is young and plays bad patterns, he got lucky 3 events due to intimidation and wonder. He'll either get better or you'll see what i'm talking about ... he can't beat a Corey Deuel or Louis Ulrich type player in the long run. He lacks knowledge. Doesnt mean he won't get better :D

It has become a recently popular trend on comment posts to question a players skill without ever really seeing that player's full game. So I must follow in the footsteps of the first to fall victim to this pitiful assult and say that if it is a question of skill, by all means, step into the 4 1/2 x 9 arena and im sure we'll be able to determine how well I play. Secondly, I don't understand how someone who plays bad patterns and succombs to the "intimidation" of better players can come in at least second place in three consecutive tournaments, chock full of world caliber players. I don't exactly see your justification for bringing down the game of the current World 10 Ball champion seeing as he's really the only player who's been keeping pace with the filipino contingent as of late. In any case I hope we can all acknowledge our mistakes and stop hiding behind emty threats...
Finally, as Im sure any seasoned pro, or at least any player of reasonable status will tell you, Sometimes players get lucky in tournaments. However all that luck can do is give you the opportunity to conitinue shooting. It is up to the player at the table to capitalize off of his fortune in order to make that moment have any real value. Nobody says anything about Cliff Joyner who was all but finished against Manuel Gama, when the spaniard, unfortunately, hung the set winning ten ball. Joyner took that ball all the way to the finals..

Very well said Rayshooter I have been playing for around 55 years and Shane may be the best to come along in a very long time. I have been watching Jonny Archer since he was 18 years old and Shane looks as good as Jonny did at 23..

Go to www.theactionreport.com to read all about Shane's victory over Corey Deuel. It was a great match. It was a race to a 100. Shane won 100 - 70. I have to take my hat of to Corey though for coming to Sioux Falls. He played great but it seemed Shane was the better man.
jonjon   | Registered | 2007-11-01 15:50:19
Who ever said that Shanes' pattern play is low percentage doesnt know sh@@ about pool. This kid is the best in the world right now and is willing to play/gamble with anyone. He has been beating eneryone for the dough so get used to seeing this kid play because he will be around and on top for awhile. Abd to the person who said that he can't beat a Corey Deuel or Louis Ulrich type player in the long run. He lacks knowledge." is CRAZY. Shane just beat Corey Duell for the cash gambling and i heard he gave John Schmidt the 7 ball and beat him for $20,000.

this site is dope though
:D
gwk9ball   | Registered | 2007-11-23 16:39:04
Shane just played Earl Strickland the same way he played Corey and beat Earl 100 to 68. Earl had a backer put up his $10,000 @ Shane put up $10,000 out of his own pocket. Anyone who says this kid isn't for real better take a 2nd look. Also he just won the US OPEN 9 BALL.
rayshooter22 - ITS GOOD TO BE RIGHT   | Registered | 2007-12-12 16:28:54
I'm not one to toot my own horn and all but I must say that I was right. Back in June when I let all of you know right here on propoolvideo.com that Shane Van Boening was the best in the USA and had all the tools to get to the top, I was surprised to see that there were those who thought my assumptions of the young american to be foolish. However, now after letting time take its due course, Shane has made me look very good indeed by winning the US Open 9 ball championships in convincing fashion. Also by continuing to test himself against the best American players out there Shane has established his dominance in the world of pool. He has also rightly been placed on the MOSCONI CUP team which I too said he'd be apart, and being a fan of this game as all of you who take part in and support propoolvideo.com undoubtedly are, I am excited to see what mark he leaves on the prestigious MOSCONI CUP. Lets just say that I feel that the team we have assembled this year might just very well be the strongest MOSCONI CUP team the USA, and the world has ever seen... chalk one up for the USA??...

By my calculations, SVB shot .933 in this match, and DC shot .900 even.

Hello everyone, I'm kinda new here. But I've been watching Pro Pool Video for a couple of weeks and just found this match yesterday. Just for the record I haven't followed the Mosconi cup this year as yet, which is probably the reason why I've never heard of Shane Van Boening before. I am by no means new to the game, but since I live in Europe, I sometimes loose touch with the new blood in America. I have witnessed great players, I have played against World Champions and I have won against them..., However, If I had to match up against Shane for Ten Grand out of my own pocket, I think I would first Sh :!: t my pants and then go to a training camp for the next two years and hope to god I could play good enough the next time around to break even. Shane is very consistent, has a very balanced concentration, very persistent and has a great killer instinkt, which means he will very rarely feel sorry for any great player's strongly unlucky misshappenings. If nothing goes drastically wrong and he keeps up this pace..... He will become another legend! P.S. My cue ball control is sweeter than his, but he makes more shots count than I do. Good luck kid, you've just become my worst nightmare!
Skipper   | 91.23.117.xxx | 2007-12-19 13:24:18
Dennis Orcullo is a great player, got a few bad breaks but would have probably lost 13:11 or 52:50 or 100:98 or so... I'd love to see Efren and Shane match-up against each other and watch it on Pro Pool Video. Race to a 100... Shane would loose probably, but it would be close... very close... who wants to bet?
Skipper   | Registered | 2007-12-22 00:16:53
Shane would loose probably??? Sorry (lose)!
I'm just a loser baby, so why don't cha kill me!

8) Terrific playing by both players. Unless I missed it, I didn't see a hand shake at the end. Bad blood?
At 23, Shane may still have a good 35 to 40 years left to rack up a few more wins...scarry thought for alot of players!
great, great, great site...thanks!!!
thekid510   | Registered | 2008-03-06 15:55:31

This is Shane from Toronto, I met Shane VB for the first time in vegas last year. I sat with his girlfriend well he played Alex in the world summit of pool 9-ball. He placed second to Alex that tourney. After that I said to all my buddies, you watch. This Shane guy, he's going to torcher everyone on the planet. Shane's a great player, I would say he's in the top five in the world right now. As for playing Efren, either one of them could win. Yes it would be close, but doe's Shane kick like Efren lol. Shane is one of the greatest guys I've met, what a gentlemen. And I wish him nothing but the best. And Shane look out because I'm comin!
brianw427   | Registered | 2008-03-28 12:09:00
ALright pesonally all of you who said shane plays bad patterns i would bet that he could probally beat all of you.
He has complete control of his game and personnaly it would be close between him and efren. Another thing i wasnt keeping count but i believe that sahne probally BRN 4 -6 racks that pretty impresive especially in alternate break cause you have to sit while the other player get to shoot. :!:
thekid510   | Registered | 2008-04-21 19:10:52
Efren said that Shane is a good player for the $$$$ but efren also said Dennis Orcullo is the best cash player in the world even tho Dennis lost to Yang in the match where they both put up 10K each look it up' Orcollo vs Yang' on youtube.com if you havent seen the match .and agine keep up the great uploads.

Very shabby of Shane van boening to wait before potting the last ball. That was a straight in 10-ball but he chose to wait a long moment to irritate Dennis orcullo. Nasty...

i love how svb reacts with bad sets/breaks
