I have to be honest - I know they are both amazing shot-makers. I've never seen either one play 1p before and I have to say from the first two racks that what is being seen here is BAD one pocket - I shut it off in the middle of the second rack for fear that I might start thinking like them.
Respect given where it's due, but I think the play here stinks...
I wish there was more 1p videos on this site - and good work getting this up, even though I didn't care for the play.

think of this match as a learning tool. No matter how good or bad you think a match is, there is always a winner. If both played perfect there would be no winner. Sometime a chance is taken and sometime it pays off. A lot of one-pocket is taking advantage of the other's error no matter what skill level. Always a learning experience.

When i read some of these responses iwonder if any of you people even play pool. If you played the game you understand when they make a good shot, when they selle out,or just make a mistake. "take that".

Say actionlouie what comments are you referring to?
just the hyper critical comments. everybody misses and everyone makes mistakes. one can play a few bad racks in one match only to comeback and play jamb up the next. i'm ecstatic that PPV puts out these videos for us to watch at no charge.
P.S. not u derby, just the stupid comments i'm sure you've seen them.

I have seen Nick play alot of 1p. He plays a slow grinding up table game. He plays alot better than in this video. I have only seen Charlie play 1p a few times and i have to say, he is a good guy but he is not a good 1p player. He will shot at anything. This is not a good match to learn from. If you want to learn 1p, watch players like Cliff joyner, Efren Reyes and Shannon Daulton.

I was wondering if Charlie has ever played one pocket base on some of the moves I see here. I am sure he will learn to move better as he plays more one pocket, however that one rail jump shot was pretty cool.
Nice Site

I would love to see more 1pocket vids, its hard to find people that like to play when I go to poolhalls and about as hard to see videos. As for the match Nick Varner is a true master.

I'd like to see some of you guys making comments to play Nick VArner in some one pocket. Or Charlie Williams for that matter. Put your money where your mouth is and step up... challenge Nick to some one pocket and see how you like it.
I think most people are just so used to watching ESPN matches where they only show the quality games, they don't realize that even the pros make mistakes. Pool is a difficult game to master completely.

I've never seen either of these guys play 1P before, but in the 1st rack when Charlie broke, I thought... "WoW" He can break! He kept that corner ball from moving! I was certain Charlie would beat the tar out of Nick and from the way Nick played that first game I think he thought the same way. The next game was very dissapointing for me. Charlie didn't play as good as I expected and Nick was feeling his way back in the game, but still missing some dumb shots and Charlie too. My question! Is this the first time they have ever played against each other? If so.. then that would explain alot to me! lol

I agree and disagree with a few of the postings above. I've played and watched alot of one pocket, and this is definitely not Nick Varner's best performance. Charlie plays some great pool but 1p is obviously not his game of study as he made some bad moves (banking way too hard). We need to get some more one pocket matches on this site to help all of us learn more about this facinating game. Particularlly with some matches with Grady Mathews, Efren, Varner, Rempe, Ciscero Murphy and some of the other masters of one pocket. Check out the San Francisco One Pocket Tournaments some time. Thanks to ProPool for posting some great videos!
This is a classic example of a player with extraordinary patience (Nicky Varner) playing someone with extraordinary impatience(Charlie Williams)... in 2001, Charlie was basically just a 9 baller - and his 1 pocket strategy in this match was extremely ummm... unique... the Bunny-Hop-Body-English is not a recommended way to get balls to drop in the hole. Unique.
Stevie dogged it.Good match otherwise th...
ON the seminole pro tour they only play ...
yum
Nate came wid it!
uuuuu very nice and smooth play by louis...
